The Payne Sisters – Two Potent “Weapons” Highly Appreciated By Some, Grossly Underestimated By Some Others.

Let me start by saying aside the product of academies and college football like Okoronkwo, Echegini, Plumptre, Babajide etc, the Payne Sisters are two World-Class players who brings a lot to the table.

Toni and Nicole boast of going through the USA Age-Grade system – (Toni – U17, U20, U23) and (Nicole U17. U19, U20) which speaks to their seasoned grooming, steadiness, consistency and refined technical abilities.

Antoniette Oyedupe Payne (Toni Payne)

The 2023 World Cup showcased Toni as undoubtedly the brainbox of the team. This player has arguably the best first touch in the Super Falcons up until now - very disciplined, understands less is more, never plays to the gallery, gifted with defence splitting passes and understands the creativity akin to midfield which she brings naturally.

She is the silent engine behind the Super Falcons’ rhythm. She’s not loud, she’s not flashy, but she’s essential. Excellent at match reading like a seasoned conductor, moving the ball with the precision of a master tactician.

What particularly sets her apart is that she doesn’t need ten touches to make an impact, just ONE and the team is home and dry!. Toni doesn't steal the spotlight because she creates it for others - this kind of selfless brilliance is rare in today’s game.

It is atrocious she was played out of position at WAFCON24, struggled and was never given another chance to show us she thrives in her comfort zone if properly deployed. Rating her using the yardstick of a winger at WAFCON24 is like judging a fish by its abilities to climb a tree. A good coach will refer to 2023 FIFA World Cup to appreciate the World Class talent we are blessed to have in Toni Payne.

Nicole Oyeyemisi Payne

Unlucky to be dealing with a second ACL at just 24, Nicole Payne plays with the discipline of a discerning businessman; confident with her primary assignment and reassuring with progressive ball carrying duties. She was the first Nigerian female player to break into the PSG fold due to her exceptional talent.

Nicole Payne at 2024 Olympics magically showed us how to tweak the defence for maximum output against Brazil.

She came in to offer the spark and link-up we missed in the second half, even as a defender. Super Falcons came more alive and recovered well from the Brazilian’s second half dominance once Nicole stepped in. She offered pace, taking the game to the Brazilians and instilled confidence once again.

Anyone with football depth will easily see a spectacular defender who can hold her own against World Class strikers as seen during her brief stint at the 2024 Olympics.
