With the rapid development of Women’s football on the continent, this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) will have the Super Falcons prove a point that they are still the team to beat in Africa. Yesterday, Thursday January 15th, the draw in Rabat placed Nigeria in Group C with Zambia, Egypt and Malawi, a group that realistically does not have any walk-over despite Nigeria’s status as defending champions.
Ten continental titles speak is a HUGE statement as the numbers don’t lie, but Group C screams all hands “and legs” must on deck as this Nations Cup holds the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in its other hand.
Zambia is one familiar foe that used the last International Window to sharpen its rough edges, not forgetting Bullish Banda and Kundananji. Egypt returns after a decade of absence with a renewed resolve to prove a point. Malawi who are entrants into the competition also pose a threat of the Chawinga sisters, whose speed and vision will rattle our defence if not strategically organized and tactically disciplined.
can trouble any defence on the continent if given space.
The 2026 WAFCON tournament is scheduled for March 17 to April 3 across Fez, Rabat and Marrakesh in Morocco. Interestingly, about two months before the tournament, with a tricky World Cup qualification tied to the competition, the element of danger cannot be overlooked as most of our players are in their prime and this could be their last World Cup realistically.
As earlier mentioned, The NFF bungled the final FIFA window of 2025 without a single friendly organised for the ladies – 9 whole wasted days that speaks to a Federation not alive to its primary duties. At a time more responsible Federations were using the window to catch up and build a formidable team, our NFF was busy lying to try and save face about an imaginary friendly game that was canceled. Up until tomorrow, we don’t know if the team were meant to travel from the moon because their name never made it out of NFF’s media team.
South Africa vs Morocco
Ghana vs England
Zambia vs Malawi
Zambia vs Zimbabwe
But it was NFF vs /imaginary opponent that pulled out.
The Super Falcons haven’t played together since October 2025 where some questionable players were smuggled into the team, hampering the progress needed for the team to blend better .
My biggest fear is with the rest of Africa rapidly catching up, and the skillful ladies unfortunately burdened with a coach without technical depth, the chickens could come home to roost in a big way.
