I H*ate To Admit This, But The Standard of Super Falcons Have Dropped Significantly 😭
Before you come with the overused line of "We Won WAFCON" Please, note that I'm referring to the context of the Super Falcons of World Cup 2023 vs same team at WAFCON2024.
I watched in disbelief the Super Falcons that played four different countries, all amongst the World’s Top 10 at the last FIFA World Cup without losing to anyone in regulation time.
It made sense we were labeled the underdogs and only there to add to the numbers since it was the Group of De*ath anyway.
Interestingly, those "underdogs" showed the World we were prospective "Top Dogs" with each game:
🇳🇬Against Canada, the reigning Olympics Champion at the time, World Class Amaka saved a spot kick, Abiodun was revealed to the World and we went with a point in pocket.
🇳🇬We played World Number 6️⃣, Australia and defeated them before their yellow and green bearing die-hard fans in regulation time, shoulders high and 3 points in the pouch.
🇳🇬Fast Forward to Ireland, we gave a good fight and added another point to seal a meeting with one of the well hyped England.
🇳🇬 Alas, no one gave us a chance, not even their coach of England who came prepared for a game plan to see them demystify the low blocks she anticipated we were going to set but she was in for a Masterstroke from Coach Randy Waldrum and the "Coconut head" ladies.😆😆😆
🟢The Super Falcons were a different beast against England (I dare anyone to go watch that game again!) The ladies took the game straight to England; Fluid, Sharp, Quick Transitions, Dangerous, Compact, Cohesive, Unpredictable and Unplayable - Everyone played Progressive Football and played for each other. If they were a delight to watch during the group games, they were a triple delight to behold at the second round.
⚪️Ashleigh Plumptre took the game personal and almost scored a statement goal against them, but for the sticks 😑
🟢Ayinde was at W*ar with James - left to Halimatu, the Borders were closed to her, and no trespassing in that zone.
⚪️Ucheibe earned the tag "Midfield Generalissimo"
🟢Toni Payne was Monstrously Intimidating with her deft first touches, deadly passes and role switching to avoid being marked out. She set up too many chances on the night.
⚪️Ajibade was tireless with her runs
🟢Onumonu was a thorn in their flesh
⚪️Uchenna Kanu was pure class!
🟢Our Defence was impregnable, Those Fantastic Four are still intact till now - You know them.
⚪️Echegini as a substitute showed glimpses of the World Class Player she has become.
I was disheartened watching the same Super Falcons against South Africa, Morocco at the last WAFCON all over again. The same team who moved the ball progressively from the ground in 2023/2024 are now a bunch of individual talents striving to keep making us proud by their sheer individual brilliance.
We dare NOT meet any of the Top 🔟 teams with this current set-up, they will easily make a minced Meat of our ladies and I don't mean to disrespect anyone of them, it is just the reality!
Question: When was the last time we played a quality friendly game with a Top Rated Team and what was the outcome?
Well, I've long moved past this local champion mindset of dominating Africa only to be a cat at the World stage.
These Ladies can conquer the World with the PROPER SET-UP and Right Management.
Super Falcons Remain My Best Team of All Time 💚🤍💚
