D’Tigress Finally Receive $100,000 For 2025 Afrobasket Triumph

Nigeria's female basketball team, known as D'Tigress, has finally received the financial reward for winning the 2025 FIBA Women's Afrobasket campaign.

 

Recall that President Bola Tinubu promised each of the triumphant players a flat, a national honour (Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON), and $100,000 when he hosted them at the Presidential Villa in 2025.

 

Speaking on behalf of her teammates, D'Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo acknowledged the latest development.

 

“We have received the houses he promised us, the national honours he bestowed on us, and now we have all received the financial rewards in our various accounts,” she said.

 

The 30-year-old Portland Fire forward also praised the President for his unwavering support and commitment to the welfare of Nigerian athletes.

 

“On behalf of the entire D'Tigress team, I want to specially thank our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this show of love and support,” Okonkwo said.

 

Amy Okonkwo also thanked the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu; National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko; and Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) President Musa Kida for their roles in ensuring the rewards got to the players and officials.

 

Poor World Cup Campaign

 

The Nigeria women's basketball side had a forgettable outing at the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

 

Prior to the tournament, Nigerian fans had tipped Coach Rena Wakama's side to progress to the knockout stage of the competition.

 

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for D'Tigress, who lost 99–81 to South Korea in their opening game.

 

The result was not any better for the reigning African champions in their second game, as they lost 71–67 to Hungary.

 

They also had a lacklustre performance against France in their final group game, losing 111–56, their heaviest defeat in Women's World Cup history.

 

After three straight defeats, Nigeria's D'Tigress finished at the bottom of Group B and were eliminated without progressing to the next round.
