Nigeria Vs China: Five Things Falconets Must Fix Before Facing China Pr

Nigeria's U-20 women's national team, the Falconets, began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain on Monday, September 7, at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland.

 

Spain took the lead through Marisa García's 13th-minute goal while Alba Cerrato doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute after beating goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma at her near post. 

 

Despite committed second-half pressure, the Falconets could not find a way past a well-organised Spanish defence as Spain claimed maximum points.

 

Positive NG Vibes monitored every minute of the encounter and observed five things that must be corrected before the next game against China PR.

 

1. Too Much Respect for Spain

 

In the opening minutes, Nigeria showed too much respect for the young Spanish side by letting them control the tempo of the game. 

 

Coach Moses Aduku's team sat back and allowed their opponents to pass the ball around and dictate the pace of the game.

 

That approach cost them dearly as Spain scored an early goal from a low cross that they failed to deal with. 

 

2. Improved Second Half

 

Having conceded in the first half, the Falconets were forced to abandon their passive start and return to the attacking football they were known for during their qualifying campaign.

 

They showed more intent after the break, played with greater speed, and pushed Spain onto the back foot for some spells of the second half. 

 

Aduku introduced Victory Lucky and Precious Oscar at half-time in search of an equaliser, and Oscar came close with an effort that went narrowly wide. They could have scored a goal or picked a point if the strikers were more productive.

 

3. Poor Finishing

 

Against a side of Spain's quality, Nigeria's forwards needed to be clinical with the chances that came their way. However, that wasn't the case throughout the game. 

 

Folajomi Olabiyi had a glorious opportunity to equalize in the first half when she was through on goal but her first-time shot was easily saved by the Spanish goalkeeper. 

 

The Falconets created a handful of half-chances in the second half, but Lucky and Oscar couldn't get the much needed goal. 

 

4. The Absence of Key Players Was Obvious

 

During the World Cup qualifiers, Chiamaka Ezekwugo marshalled the defense with discipline, especially against Malawi.

 

Kindness Ifeanyi was always in the right place at the right time to score crucial goals that secured Nigeria's qualification. Shukurat Moshood and Joy Igbokwe added flair and threat to the team's overall quality.

 

Surprisingly, none of the players are with the team in Poland. Captain Joy Igbokwe and Abdulwahab withdrew from the World Cup squad before the tournament because of visa issues.

 

As a result of the players’ absence, Coach Aduku had a less experienced group to work with, which showed against Spain. 

 

5. Defensive Lapses and Goalkeeping Errors

 

Though Nigeria's defending was porous during the encounter, Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma could have done better to cover her near post for the second goal. 

 

Coach Aduku must address these defensive lapses before Thursday's crucial second Group F fixture against China PR, kicking off at 5 p.m. at the Arena Sosnowiec.

 

What Coach Aduku Should Do Differently

 

The 2-0 defeat leaves Nigeria third in Group F, and must avoid defeat against China on Thursday to keep their knockout hopes alive. 

 

Nigeria must start on the front foot against the Asian side and score as early as possible. They shouldn't give the Chinese ladies time on the ball. 

 

The defence must be more organized and focused to avoid unnecessary fouls and cheap goals. 

 

Goalkeeper Uzoma must work on her confidence and decision-making around near-post situations before facing China.
