As for Nigeria, the Flamingos are set for a crunch Round of 16 battle against El Tri of Mexico.

Having defeated defending champions North Korea 3-1 in the last group game, all eyes are currently on Coach Akeem Busari and his ladies as they hope to continue their newfound winning mentality.

While we count down to the clash, here is a comprehensive pre-match report, featuring recent form, team news, players to watch, and a prediction.

Nigeria vs Mexico: Form

Nigeria

The Flamingos began their World Cup campaign slowly, losing 2-1 to Poland in the opening fixture. Coach Busari’s young girls were fragile at the back, giving the Polish strikers more space and time to explore in the first half. Though the Nigerian side had a slightly better second half and pulled one back in the 79th minute, they couldn’t prevent the 2-1 defeat.

The second game was a bit better, as they defeated Puerto Rico, the weakest side in the group. However, despite the 2-0 victory, many Nigerian football lovers weren’t impressed with the team’s wastefulness in front of goal. The Flamingos recorded seven shots on target from roughly 27 attempts, but managed just two goals – a conversion rate of around 7 percent.

Though the slim 2-0 victory earned maximum three points, it didn’t change their position in the group standings, as they remained third after matchday two.

Heading into the last group game against the favourites, only a few football fans  gave them a chance. Surprisingly, the Flamingos were ruthless from start to finish, scoring two first-half goals through Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku before Kanyinsola Yusuf added a superb free-kick in the 56th minute.

North Korea pulled one back from the penalty spot, but the 3-1 result ended the champions' unbeaten run at the tournament. The Flamingos scored six, conceded three, and kept one clean sheet across the group stage.

In short, the Flamingos’ form keeps improving as the tournament progresses. They will hope to maintain that trajectory throughout the tournament.

Mexico

Like Nigeria, El Tri started their World Cup campaign on a losing note, following a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening encounter.

However, they bounced back from the disappointment by winning the remaining group matches. Goals from Mía Urbano, Citlalli Reyes, and Nicole Jiménez gave them an impressive 3-1 comeback victory over Chile, while Reyes’ lone goal against Australia sealed their qualification to the Round of 16.

In three games, the Mexicans found the back of the net on four occasions, conceded three, and kept one clean sheet. They finished second in Group F with six points, and they arrive in Morocco as bronze winners in 2025.

Team News and Possible Starting XI

Nigeria

At the time of writing, head coach Busari is understood to have all players fit and ready for the upcoming encounter. Hence, he is tipped to retain the XI that thrashed Korea DPR, which means Jane Ijirigho will be in goal.

Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen, and Kanyinsola Yusuf will be at the back, while Mary Dunstan, Favour Nkwocha, and Tosin Rafiu will operate in the middle. Lively Oluwakemi Adegbuyi will lead the attack alongside Oluebube Umejiaku and Queen Joseph.

Nigeria U-17 possible XI: Jane Ijirigho; Azeezat Oduntan, Ohunene Sunday, Esther Stephen, Kanyinsola Yusuf; Mary Dunstan, Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu; Queen Joseph, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Oluebube Umejiaku

Mexico

El Tri head coach Miguel Ángel Gamero will likely retain the starting XI that narrowly pipped Australia in the final group game.

That means Ania López-Acuña will be between the sticks, while Monroy, Delgado, Figueroa Figueroa, and Pérez will provide the required shield. Uscanga Beas, Sánchez, and Reyes will operate in the middle, while Pérez García, Urbano Carmona, and Arredondo Méndez will shoulder the goalscoring responsibilities.

Mexico probable XI: López-Acuña; Monroy, Delgado, Figueroa Figueroa, A. Pérez; Uscanga Beas, Sánchez, Reyes; Pérez García, Urbano Carmona, Arredondo Méndez.

Players to Watch

OluwakemiAdegbuyi (Nigeria):

The in-form striker scored in each of the last two games – against Puerto Rico and North Korea. Her speed and goalscoring technique will be needed by the West African giants.

KanyinsolaYusuf (Nigeria):

The defender was named Player of the Match against North Korea after her stunning free-kick, and her set-piece quality is a weapon Mexico must respect.

CitlalliReyes (Mexico):

The El Tri captain scored the winning goals against Chile and Australia, and has now played more matches at the U-17 Women’s World Cup than any other player in history.

MíaUrbano (Mexico):

The forward equalised against Chile and hit the crossbar against Australia, so she will be hungry for a goal in the knockout round.

Time and Venue

The match will take place on Thursday, 29 October 2026, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex (Pitch 2) in Salé, Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 pm Nigerian time.

Prediction

Positive NG Vibes expects a keenly contested encounter with lots of attacking moves and goalscoring opportunities. Therefore, we tip Nigeria to win 3-2 after 90+ minutes of action
