An early first-half goal from Tosin Rafiu gave the West African powerhouse the lead in the eighth minute, before the Young Lionesses were denied an equaliser when goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma saved Rachel Maltby's penalty in the 34th minute.

A second-half goal from Janet Akekoromowei in the 47th minute extended Nigeria's lead before Mary Mamudu completed the scoring in the 73rd minute.

England's efforts to get back into the game were unproductive as Coach Moses Aduku's side sealed a spot in the next round, where they will face the winner between Poland and Colombia.

In this report, Positive NG Vibes highlights three major observations from the highly entertaining encounter.

1. TosinRafiu: TheSilentHeroine

Prior to the tournament, Nigerian media, pundits, and reporters channelled their attention on Janet Akekoromowei, largely due to her achievements in the 2024/25 NWFL Premiership season, in which she scored 13 goals in 19 appearances for Nasarawa Amazons and was named the league's Most Valuable Player.

However, Tosin Rafiu has been Nigeria's standout player since the start of the tournament.

Covering a total distance of 27.96km in the group stage, the FC Robo Queens forward troubled opponents with her pace, while her goalscoring instinct makes her a threat to any goalkeeper.

Against New Caledonia, she won the penalty that was converted by Ramotalahi Kareem in the 17th minute, helping Nigeria to a resounding 10-1 victory in the last group game.

Thanks to her eighth-minute goal against England, Nigeria took the lead early and disrupted the Young Lionesses' game plan to a large extent.

At this point, it is safe to say that the promising youngster is one of the players Nigerians should watch out for in the near future.

2. ImprovedGoalkeeping

In the first game of the tournament, Nigeria lost 2-0 to Spain due to a fragile defence and poor positioning from goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma.

However, there has since been steady improvement in the goalkeeping department, as she conceded just once across the other group games.

Uzoma was in top form against England, making several important saves to deny the Young Lionesses. Her save denied Princess Ademiluyi's effort in the 26th minute to protect Nigeria's slim lead.

The highlight of the day came when the Falconets captain saved Rachel Maltby's penalty in the 34th minute, keeping Nigeria's advantage intact going into half-time.

She continues to show why she was on our pre-tournament list of three players to watch, and why she is one of the most important players in the team.

3. MissedOpportunities

Though Nigeria won 3-0, they could have scored more goals had they been more clinical.

Janet Akekoromowei's long-range strike missed the target, while Ramotalahi Kareem shot straight at the England goalkeeper in the second half.

None of Precious Oscar's efforts could beat England goalkeeper Katie Cox, while Mary Mamudu also missed a clear-cut opportunity late in the game.

While the team celebrates a clean sheet and a well-deserved victory, Coach Aduku's ladies must learn to take their chances as the competition gets tougher and more intense.

Conclusion

Judging by this performance and result, the Falconets have the individual quality to trouble any side left in the competition.

If Coach Aduku's side can sharpen their finishing while keeping the newfound defensive discipline, Nigeria will head into the last eight as one of the most dangerous sides remaining in Poland.
