GOALKEEPERS
Nigeria's goalkeeping department has experienced multiple changes in the starting XI as Eric Chelle continues to search for the perfect hands for the number one position.
Nwabali: The Costly ill-advised Decision
Prior to his very ill-advised contract termination with Chippa United, Stanley Nwabali was the undisputed first choice. Since his debut, the goalie has had an incredible record, including four clean sheets at AFCON 2025 and penalty-save heroics at both the 2023 and 2025 tournaments.
While his showmanship can be unnecessary at times, his imposing presence and overall ability often give the defense confidence during games. Unsurprisingly, Eric Chelle made him his first-choice goalkeeper for AFCON 2025.
More importantly, he was excellent during the AFCON, including those saves in the shootout against Egypt.
When Nigerians were already used to seeing him between the sticks, Nwabali terminated his contract with his South African club, leaving him clubless and without regular football for months.
His lack of game time eventually caught up with him, as the 30-year-old netminder was left out of Nigeria's squads for the March friendlies against Iran and Jordan, the Unity Cup and the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal. Instead, Chelle handed a maiden call-up to Arthur Okonkwo.
ARTHUR OKONKWO: The Unforgettable Debut
Arthur Okonkwo finally made his long-awaited debut in a low-key Unity Cup semi-final against Zimbabwe, where he produced a top-class save after the break to help Nigeria to a 2-0 win and a clean sheet.
While most Nigerians didn't watch the game because of the Super Eagles' World Cup qualification failure, the then Wrexham goalkeeper did enough to put himself in contention for a starting spot in the team.
He followed his excellent debut with another great display when the team battled Jamaica in the final, keeping a second clean sheet in a 3-0 win.
Though two caps may not be enough to stake a claim for the first-choice spot, Okonkwo's club form has been nothing short of brilliant. Three clean sheets, 20 saves and a Man of the Match award in six Championship games for Charlton Athletic, his new loan club, make it hard to overlook him when the team list is released on Friday.
Nonetheless, the question on everyone's mind is whether he has done enough to displace Nwabali from the XI.
MADUKA OKOYE: A Second Chance?
If club form and quality of opponents faced are the determining factors, Maduka Okoye would surely be in goal on Friday because he stands head and shoulders above his competitors.
Playing in Serie A automatically puts him against some of the best strikers in the world. So far this season, he has played against Inter Milan and Lazio, among others.
He didn't just play against these top sides; he also made his presence count last season, keeping 10 clean sheets in 30 Serie A games, including a 3-0 win away at AC Milan. That made him the first Nigerian goalkeeper in more than a decade to reach double figures for clean sheets in a season in one of Europe's top five leagues. Though is yet to keep a clean sheet in the 2026/27 campaign, those numbers show what he can do against top opposition.
Okoye's excellent form is not limited to his club side, as he showed his world-class quality against Portugal in June. His double save in the 48th and 49th minutes to deny João Félix was a confirmation of how good and how reliable he can be against top opposition.
With 21 caps for the national team, Okoye is far more experienced than Okonkwo and second only to Nwabali (34 caps) among the three available options.
However, talent alone is not enough in football, because football is a team sport that requires understanding and chemistry among the players. This is where Okoye falls short, as he hasn't been with the rest of the players for long.
He was left out of the squad for AFCON 2025 and wasn't invited for the Unity Cup. Before the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal, his appearances for Nigeria had been sporadic since 2022.
Who Should Man The Post?
Owing to his late arrival to camp, Maduka Okoye may be left out of the starting XI on Friday.
As for Arthur Okonkwo, it appears a little too early for him to own a starting berth ahead of his competitors.
That leaves us with Nwabali, who was the first choice before his poor decision. Nonetheless, Eric Chelle may want to continue with the goalie who has earned his trust during the AFCON.
